It is situated in Shivpuri District of Gwalior region in northwest Madhya Pradesh. It was named after Madho Rao Scindia, the Maharaja of Gwalior belonging to the Scindia dynasty of the Marathas. Earlier its dense forests were the hunting grounds of the Mughal emperors & Maratha royals. The park is unique in having both lake and forest ecosystems and has a varied terrain of forested hills and flat grasslands around the lake. Marsh Crocodiles are found in abundance inside them. Due to this, the lake popularly offers "Crocodile Safari" to the visitors, which is its unique feature.
